Art Out of Africa brings you another wildlife shona stone sculpture, small and detailed. This is the chameleon or Rhwavi. Hand carved by African artists using hand tools and polished with beeswax.
There is a spirit in the magical chameleon. The Shona will never touch chameleons. Folklore says that one day a curious man saw a chameleon changing colors, and was so fascinated that he picked it up - the startled and angry lizard bit the man's hand and stole the color from the palms of the man's hand. The man pleaded with the chameleon to please return the hand's color, but the chameleon would not, for he said that would teach people not to pick things up without permission. This good moral is preached by the grandmother to the grandchildren as a lesson of proper manners in life.
Each chameleon is a bit different from the next, as they are hand carved there are no two alike.
This is an example of the one you would receive.
Base measures 3" and height is 4". Remember sizes will varely slightly.
A great gift and I can even copy the story and include it if you wish.
